#Holley Sniper EFI Install on #Mopar 440 Big Block With Aluminum Heads

#Holley Sniper EFI Install on #Mopar 440 Big Block With Aluminum Heads

TRV Digital |

We just got done installing the Holley Sniper EFI system in our 69 Coronet convertible. Built 440 Chrysler engine with Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads. We learned a few things during the install.

  • First, there are clearance issues with the Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads. We opted for the Holley 440 distributor for the tuning advantages. We had to shave approximately 1/4" deep off the passenger side head to allow for the distributor to fit.
  • You have to run the adapter harness with the Holley distributor.
  • By using the Holley distributor, you have to use the Holley coil driver that came with the EFI system in place of the electronic ignition box. This is not in the instructions. The coil driver is the little box that fires the distributor. Without the coil driver, you have no ignition.
  • We had to remove the electronic ignition box and ballast in order to get 12 volts going to the coil. We are running a MSD Blaster coil. Basically, by using the Holley distributor, the system is wiring to run like a GM set up.
  • Now, you can use a MSD or Mopar magnetic pick up distributor- instructions for this set up is on the Holley website. However, we opted for the Holley distributor in order to get the most benefits from the EFI tuning system. By using the Holley distributor, it tricks the ecu into thinking the engine has a cam censor & crank trigger (both of which early Mopars do not have).
  • We replaced our 1/4 return fuel line with a 3/8 return. We used a 3/8 front to rear fuel line for both the main front to rear fuel line and our return line.
  • We also jumped our ballast wires together. Our car was wiring for Mopar electronic ignition so we had to make a few modifications and run the EFI wires accordingly.

Car starts right up, idles great. We no longer have cold crank issues, bogging in the carb acceleration issues, and no more rough running or idling problems. We are just starting to drive the car now. They say it takes a good 500 miles for the system to self tune. We will keep you updated. The Holley EFI system seems to be a great addition to our ride.
